McDonald's Netherlands Shared Data on Change Your Password Day

On Change Your Password Day, McDonald's Netherlands playfully reminded people that using the names of common items on its menu is both common and insecure, while simultaneously promoting its products as memorable.

International platform Have I Been Pwned collects information from data breaches and helps people check whether their email address or password appears in leaked datasets online. Data from the website Have I Been Pwned shows that the password "bigmac" has been used 110,922 times. The dataset also points to other widely used and potentially hackable passwords like "frenchfries" (34,407 times,) "happymeal' (17,269 times) and "mcnuggets" (2,219 times.) This teachable moment from the fast food franchise tells customers that if a password is as predictable as their usual combo meal, it's time for an upgrade.
