Plant-Based Protein Projects

Protein Industries Canada Enhances the Canadian Food Industry

Protein Industries Canada has unveiled a new collaborative effort aimed at advancing the development of pea and fava protein ingredients and innovative food products, signaling a significant evolution in Canada's food industry landscape. This initiative is supported by a $7.7 million investment, with $3.3 million from Protein Industries Canada and the remainder from industry partners including Lovingly Made Flour Mills, TMRW Foods, and Dutton Farms. The project aims to optimize ingredient processing techniques and introduce new meat alternatives to Canada's food industry.

Beginning with field evaluations to identify optimal varieties, the collaboration will focus on refining processing and extrusion methods to produce texturized vegetable protein ingredients. These efforts are designed to meet the functional requirements of food processors and enhance the nutritional consistency and affordability of the final products. By integrating innovations in ingredient processing and food manufacturing, Protein Industries Canada and its collaborators aim to bolster Canada's role in the global plant-based food and bioproducts sector.
