The BitLit app aims to provide owners of physical books access to the accompanying digital version for free or at a discount. Working with publishers, the Canadian company wants to help book lovers access literature on both print and digital mediums.
The app works by scanning your physical book before giving you a digital copy. BitLit uses your smartphone camera to take a snapshot of your book's copyright page and front cover. The app requires that you write a unique identifier on the copyright page before scanning it. Once BitLit confirms that you're the owner of the book, it offers you a free or discounted companion ebook. The pictures are also stored so that nobody else can use your physical book to gain access to a digital one.
