Nitrate-Rich Beetroot Interventions

University of Exeter Introduced a Beetroot Juice Protocol

Researchers at the University of Exeter introduced a concentrated beetroot juice protocol that lowered blood pressure in older adults, featuring a twice-daily dose of nitrate-rich juice designed to reshape the oral microbiome. The trial compared 39 younger and 36 older participants and found a meaningful systolic drop only in the older group after two weeks.

Using gene sequencing, the team reported that the intervention suppressed inflammation-linked bacteria such as Prevotella while boosting nitrate-converting strains like Neisseria, which produce nitrite from dietary nitrate; nitrite then converts to nitric oxide, a vasodilator. The study recommended roughly half to one cup of beetroot juice daily or equivalent servings of nitrate-rich vegetables.

For consumers, the finding suggests a simple dietary strategy to improve vascular function and circulation in aging adults, supporting blood-pressure management and exercise recovery. The work highlights how targeted foods can remodel microbial communities to restore age-declining nitric oxide production.

Microbiome-targeted Nutritional Therapies
Personalized nitrate-rich dietary protocols have been shown to reshape the oral microbiome and improve vascular function in older adults, indicating potential for foods that restore nitric oxide pathways.
Functional Nitrate-rich Foods
Concentrated beetroot juice and equivalent vegetable servings demonstrate clinically meaningful blood-pressure effects in aging populations, pointing to demand for standardized nitrate-delivery products.
Oral Microbiome Diagnostics for Vascular Health
Sequencing-linked shifts in bacteria such as Neisseria and Prevotella correlate with blood-pressure changes, creating scope for diagnostic markers that predict response to dietary nitrate.

Where This Applies

Nutraceuticals and Functional Beverages
Clinically validated beetroot formulations and nitrate-enriched beverages could redefine supplement categories for cardiovascular support in older consumers.
Precision Nutrition Platforms
Age- and microbiome-informed dietary guidance centered on nitrate intake may enable subscription services and personalized meal plans focused on circulatory health.
Longevity and Aging Services
Integrating microbiome-modulating nutrition into geriatric care presents opportunities to enhance exercise recovery and blood-pressure management in aging populations.
