Garlic-Derived Muscle Health Compounds

Wakunaga of America Researches a Garlic-Derived Compound

Wakunaga of America has announced that a specific compound found in Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract — known as S-1-propenyl-L-cysteine or S1PC — demonstrated in a peer-reviewed study the ability to counteract skeletal muscle aging by activating an inter-organ communication pathway that connects fat tissue to the brain, which then enhances signalling to muscles.

Published in Cell Metabolism, the research showed that long-term S1PC treatments in aged mice produced significantly increased skeletal muscle force, restored body temperatures to youthful levels, and reduced overall frailty index scores. A randomized double-blind clinical trial in healthy middle-aged humans found that a single oral dose of S1PC-enriched garlic powder successfully increased circulating levels of the key enzyme eNAMPT in subjects with healthy body fat mass.

Garlic-derived Bioactives
Discovery of S1PC highlights small-molecule organosulfur compounds as a new class of bioactives that could redefine natural-product pipelines for muscle-support therapeutics.
Inter-organ Signaling Therapeutics
Research linking adipose-to-brain-to-muscle communication reveals signaling pathways as therapeutic targets that could enable drugs or biologics to systemically reverse age-related muscle decline.
Nutraceuticals for Sarcopenia
Clinical evidence of an oral garlic-derived ingredient increasing eNAMPT levels suggests evidence-backed nutraceuticals may compete with conventional interventions for preserving muscle function in aging populations.

Who This Affects Most

Pharmaceuticals
Translating S1PC mechanisms into synthetic analogs or repurposed drugs presents opportunities for new prescription treatments addressing frailty and sarcopenia.
Nutraceuticals and Supplements
Companies producing standardized, clinically validated garlic formulations could disrupt supplement markets by offering measurable biomarker-responsive products for middle-aged and elderly consumers.
Functional Food Manufacturing
Incorporation of S1PC-enriched ingredients into fortified foods offers possibilities for mainstream dietary products that deliver clinically relevant muscle-support benefits.
