AI-Powered Age Verification

Apple Uses Selfies to Confirm Adult Account Access

Apple is introducing AI-powered age verification that allows users to confirm adulthood through facial analysis rather than submitting identification documents. Available in supported regions on iOS and iPadOS 27.2 or later, the feature helps users access age-restricted applications, adjust safety settings, and complete certain account activities.

During verification, users capture facial images by moving their heads in four directions. Age-estimation models process the images both locally and through Apple's Private Cloud Compute, with results combined on the device. Apple states that the images remain inaccessible to others and are deleted once confirmation is complete. Verified adults do not need to repeat the process.

For Apple, this approach supports varying regional age requirements while offering an alternative to credit cards and government-issued identification. The system also reinforces the company's emphasis on privacy-conscious account management and controlled access to digital services.
