Accessible EV Charging Stations

This Charging System Uses a Camera-Fitted Robotic Arm

As electric vehicles slowly become more and more ubiquitous around the world, there is an increasing need for EV charging station solutions that are accessible and cater to the needs of people living with disabilities, which is precisely why American automaker Ford is trialing a high-tech robotic station that makes the process easier for people with mobility limitations.

Currently being tested as part of a collaboration with Germany's Dortmund University, this particular EV charging station allows the motorist to pull up to the station and use a mobile app to set the charging process in motion, with a robotic charging system taking care of the heavy lifting. A robotic arm extends towards the vehicle and uses a camera attachment to find the charging port, before plugging itself in and juicing up the vehicle.

Ultimately, this EV charging station would help take the stress out of charging not only for people living with disabilities but the elderly as well.
