The automotive restoration company Retro Designs has unveiled a custom-built 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE to celebrate its fifteenth anniversary. This vehicle is powered by a modern AMG-sourced C55 V8 engine that the company claims is the fastest example of this classic model ever to reach public roads.
Based in Concord, North Carolina, Retro Designs completely reengineered the vintage car from the ground up, constructing a bespoke chassis with a fully reworked suspension and a Brembo braking system to handle the increased power. The original's crisp, timeless exterior lines have been preserved. Thousands of hours of labour went into the restoration, with exterior paint finished in Axalta Chromax XP Irish Green and a meticulously updated cabin that employed multiple artisans to modernize the interior while maintaining a period-correct aesthetic. The custom-built 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE also boasts $20,000 custom Evod Industries billet wheels engineered as floating hubcaps with stationary logos that remain upright even when the car is in motion.
