There are a larger number of sports websites out there targeted towards everyone ranging from couch-potato TV-watching sports fans to amateur athletes who actually like to get out and about.

Often, sports websites are set up to complement a particular tournament and help sports fans follow that event. For this reason, new websites devoted to the soccer World Cup seem to emerge every four years.

There are also many websites that encourage amateur athletes and fitness enthusiasts to attain their goals and either improve or maintain their fitness levels. The advent of social media means many of these sports websites now have a strong social component to them, and websites are popping up even for niche sports.

Sports websites vary wildly in their design. Some are more minimalist and 'to the point' whilst others aim to pack as much information on the screen as possible.
