It’s hard to believe, but removing the appendix without scarring is not possible, and in more ways than one. Trend Hunter posted an article on no-incision appendectomies through the vagina last week, but this week the world’s first appendix removal surgery through the mouth was conducted. The scar-free surgery was performed on Jeff Scholtz a former marine in San Diego, California. Surgeons used a flexible pipe with miniature tools at the end to perform an incision in the stomach wall to remove the appendix.

Mr Scholtz, a clothing manufacturer, said: "They told me to take it easy but I felt great.
"I was eating pizza and doing situps three days later.
"You'd think the way it was done, going through the stomach wall, I'd have had all kind of stomach pains, but there was nothing.
"My father had the conventional appendix removal. I didn't want the standard issue scar."
