Team of scientists and innovators at MIT and the University of Galway over in Scotland have developed a high-tech implant that is designed to be able to leverage AI technologies to be able to carry out drug delivery in a manner that helps to thwart scar tissue.
While there are many drug-delivering medical plants out there, the fact of the matter is that they often end up getting blocked by scar tissue, which is precisely why the scientists at University of Galway in MIT devised a new type of implant. The mechanism behind this innovation is that this soft-body implant inflates or deflates when scar tissue cells are detected, which helps to temporarily stall the proliferation of scar tissue.
What's more, this medical implant can also make up for the inevitable arrival of scar tissue atop the implant by altering the pattern of its drug delivery to keep dosage constant.
"This approach could generate revolutionary changes in implantable drug delivery for a range of chronic diseases," stated Dr. Rachel Beatty of the University of Galway.
