 Stanford's Mobile Phone Orchestra Turns PDAs Into Chamber Instruments Published: Jan 14, 09 Views: 2,651 The Stanford Mobile Phone Orchestra (MoPho for short, get it?) is my latest nerdaliciously clever musical find. These tech-savvy students take plain old mobile phones and mod them into chamber instruments. This isn’t chiptune music by any means. Watch the video above, where the Stanford Mobile Phone Orchestra takes on ‘Stairway to Heaven’ by Led Zeppelin. You can see the musicians blow into their modified cell phones to make them produce sound. Fascinating.  The Mobile Phone Orchestra (MoPhO) is a new repertoire-based ensemble using mobile phones as the primary musical instrument. Far beyond ring-tones, MoPhO's interactive musical works take advantage of the unique technological capabilities of today's hardware, transforming phone keypads, built-in accelerometers, and built-in microphones into powerful and yet mobile chamber meta-instruments.
