American Eagle Outfitters is using shopkick -- Apple's iBeacon-based technology -- in several American Eagle and Aerie stores. The use of such beacon technology allows retailers to pinpoint the physical location of consumers in stores and provide them with timely offers that might be of interest to them.

Shopkick allows American Eagle to show them rewards, deals and product recommendations when they're in a store. For example, if a consumer purchases a piece of clothing, the beacon technology may send them a notification suggesting another piece of clothing that might go well with another purchase.

The technology is easily installed -- all that's needed is to stick the beacon device on a wall or on any flat surface. The device then connects with customers' smartphones to send them personalized location-specific information.
