The Ole Miss football team, the team representing the University of Mississippi, is using Apple's iBeacon technology to enhance the spectator appearance at the games. The program will also be linked to a special rewards program. The system will be integrated into a mobile app that will provide users with schedules, scores and other content.

The system consists of over a 100 beacons placed throughout athletic venues on the campus. The beacon technology checks in individuals attending sporting events and gives them points, allowing them to eventually claim rewards such as game tickets and attire.

The Ole Miss football team's use of the iBeacon represents the first time the beacon system is being used in collegiate sports, but chances are it definitely won't be the last. With professional sports teams using beacons to enhance their brand and foster engagement, it only makes sense that college teams follow suit.
