Menstruation is still something rarely talked about, despite the fact that it’s a monthly occurrence for most women. Founded in 2002, Mooncup Ltd. is a woman-positive menstruation product that is green, inexpensive, safe and convenient.

The Mooncup is a reusable sanitary product made from silicone, making it very appropriate for women with sensitive skin and/or latex allergies. The Mooncup is inserted into the vagina and shapes to vaginal walls in order to prevent leaking. The Mooncup doesn’t need to be changed as often as the average women changes her sanitary pad or tampon. According to the Mooncup website, women use 11, 000 sanitary products (on average) in her life, all of which can be replaced by a Mooncup.

In 2004, Mooncup was categorized an ethical business by the Ethical Company Organisation, which making it the first sanitary protect manufacturer with such certification. The award was based on Mooncup’s animal-friendly products, as well as overall commitment to community and positive menstrual health.

Run by a small team of eight women, the Brighton-based Mooncup has won numerous awards including the Best New Product Award at the 2003 Natural Trade Show and the 2004 Best Environmentally Friendly Product by the Vegan Society.

Mooncup urges that its product is safer, greener and cheaper: safer because it contains no bleach, dyes, BPA, toxins or latex; greener because it’s reducing the number of tampons and pads that end up in landfills; and cheaper because one Mooncup lasts for years. The Mooncup team works with medical professionals and nurses in order to increase choice for women.

Mooncup has also raised awareness about menstruation, by educating women and creating discussion about a topic that is directly relevant to half of the world’s population. The Mooncup ‘Love Your Vagina’ campaign was an interesting way to raise awareness and get people talking about a subject that is so often silenced, or relegated to women’s locker rooms.
