 The House of Mouse Decides to Shanghai Its Iconic Park Published: Jan 11, 09 Comments: 1 Views: 2,181 The Disney folks aren’t waiting around for the economy to improve worldwide, they are singlehandedly making it happen. In announcing the $3.9 billion theme park expansion in Shanghai, they have committed to the largest foreign investment in China—ever. The park would create 50,000 jobs and help the Chinese understand American culture of long lines, bad food and catering to every whim of children firsthand.  But as yet, “no deal has been signed, no project has been approved,” said a Disney parks VP. It could take a year for China to sign off on the project; building could finish by 2014. The “first phase” of the park would cover over half a square mile with a theme park, hotels, and shopping. Disney’s Hong Kong park has struggled, and its domestic parks have seen a dropoff in attendance amid the downturn.
