McDonald's France is introducing RFID technology into its reusable containers to ensure proper recycling after consumer use. The implementation of this project holds the potential to contribute significantly to McDonald's waste reduction efforts, as employees will be able to track reusable tableware stock in real-time. The RFID-compatible packaging, developed by Checkpoint Systems, is heat and water-resistant, food-safe, and minimizes environmental impact. Moreover, this initiative aligns with the recent implementation of new French legislation, which officially came into force in January 2023.
As of now, Checkpoint has provided over 1,200 RFID containers to multiple McDonald's locations in France. Currently, there are no plans to use this technology in North American restaurants.
