Some would argue it’s a bit peculiar that an 18 year old American can die for his country but isn’t allowed to have a beer with his buddies on the weekends. After arguments like this one, some states are considering lowering the legal drinking age from 21 to 18.

An online petition to lower the legal drinking age to 18 already has 38,999 signatures. They argue that since people can fight in the war at 18, vote at 18, they could be potential candidates for jury duty at 18, they should be able to have a drink then too.

“If an 18-year old citizen is to be given these responsibilities, why is the legal drinking age 21?” the petition asks. “Does the U.S. Government not trust those of us under 21? They trust us with their votes, yet they cannot treat us like full adults for another 3 years!”

Lawmakers in Kentucky, Wisconsin and South Carolina introduced bills that would lower the drinking age for military personnel only. A planned ballot initiative in Missouri would apply to everyone 18 and older and an initiative in South Dakota would allow all 19- and 20-year-olds to buy low-alcohol beer. (newsok)
