The Karmany International Advertising Exhibition is branding itself in a provocative way this year. It has come up with a series of ads that push the boundaries and standards many people associate with mere commercial promotions. High art is often thought of as far beyond the earthly, practical concerns of advertising. Well, the ads featured here point out the similarities, if only aesthetic, between these two realms of visual communication.
Dali’s ‘Persistence of Time’ is featured below an Ogilvy Paris ad for Perrier that depicts a woman opening an ice-cold bottle of the premium carbonated water as sunglasses, surfboards and the like melt languidly in the background. The similarities between the surrealist’s work and that of the ad agency are evident.
