The March 2009 issue of Vogue featuring Michelle Obama hits the stands tomorrow. On the historical cover, the first lady is dressed in an outfit by Jason Wu.

Photographed by Annie Leibovitz, the same famous photographer who shot her for Paris Match, Michelle Obama is seen wearing a magenta gown from the same designer who did her inaugural ball gown.

Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour says, “Change was the clarion call of Barack Obama’s election campaign, though I don’t think any of us at Vogue initially realized that would include the difference that was going to be made by First Lady Michelle Obama’s wardrobe.”

Think Annie photoshopped her?

Photoshop or not, it is an unfortunate picture. If this was the best and cover-worthy, I'd hate to see the outtakes. Very underwhelming for such an event cover.

I think the photo reflects the humanity and approachablity of Michelle Obama. With the entire world projecting icon status on her, I like the understated image.

I get what you mean Katie, but Vogue is a fashion bible, its for 'high fashion', not a normal magazine. American Vogue is arguably the weakest of Vogue's editions, so its not surprising. For me, a Vogue cover should be a special fashion statement regardless of who the model is.

Vogue is all about pioneering the next wave of fashion; the magazine sets the tone for new styles, and perhaps Michelle Obama is their new muse and inspiration. That and Vogue is just as faced with the recession as other businesses, perhaps even more so since print media is hurting as an industry -- going for Michelle Obama as a cover model was a clear jackpot, and in the end, that's what the magazine, no matter how 'high 'fashion' it is, needs to do. No sales, no publication. I agree with Katie though, I like that they portrayed Michelle as understated; had she been overly glammed up, she probably would have been criticized even more.

Oh, I am all for the choice of Obama as the cover model, I just don't like the image. I guess I am not an 'understated' kind of guy, I like things more interesting. Fun trivia fact, in 2008 US Vogue only had 1.5 models on the cover (the 0.5 comes from a shared cover), all other cover models were celebs and movie stars. So when American Vouge does have a credible model on their cover like other Vogue editions, THAT would be news. They have been a sell out for a long time. (there is news of them atoning their sins with a group model cover soon featuring the best models in the biz)
