All thanks to the movie Juno, hamburger phones are now very much in demand; sales of eBay for these silly phones have shot through the roof. Seriously. The sales have gone up 759% on eBay since the movie was released! If you haven’t seen the flick, the main character, Juno, uses the corded Hamburger Phone to call a women’s health clinic. Before the movie, which has been nominated for four Academy Awards, no one would have wanted an item like this. People had almost stopped buying home phones all together, so it’s astonishing to see how a short feature in a film can spur on such madness for an otherwise unwanted item. It’s a seriously hideous invention. It looks like a hamburger, complete with sesame bun and slab of processed cheese. The buns lift apart on a hinge, and the top part has the dialing keys. Complete with a phone jack and spiral cord, the $15.99 device is perfect for any ham out there looking for attention.  To a generation weaned on wireless, a corded phone has a strong retro appeal; that element, and the handset's hip movie tie-in, is leading teenagers such as Brittany Wallace to want one of their own.
"Seeing a hamburger phone just in a mall, it may not have struck me as something cool," says Wallace, an 18-year-old Juno fan from Kitchener, Ont., who recently bought one of the handsets for $10.
"However, in a movie, it makes it popular. And even though many people hate to admit it, popular is, in the end, better."
