This group VR experience allows children to explore the surface of Mars without requiring headsets, goggles or a space craft. Field Trip to Mars is the first group virtual reality experience created in collaboration by Lockheed Martin, McCann New York and visual effects firm Framestore.
Using technologically advanced screens that are not available elsewhere, a school bus can be used to make students feel as if they are driving on martian roads instead of the streets of Washington DC. The technology behind this group VR experience also functions in real time and is mapped in coordination with real DC roads so the Mars landscape adjusts as the bus manoeuvres on Earth.
This exciting project shows how virtual reality can be used for educational purposes in a way that benefits multiple people at once.
