The most popular f-word in product design these days has to be 'folding', and one of its best applications has to be the Fend, a folding bike helmet that collapses down when not in use so that it takes up a whole lot less space when it's not protecting your skull.

Developed by a group of innovators based in Manhattan, this folding bike helmet features a series of so-called 'ribs' that use a secure joint system to hold their position, an important feature that guarantees that there's no chance of the helmet folding or part-folding when you're wearing it.

Despite its exceptional compactness and innovative folding mechanism, the Fend helmet surpasses safety standards, making it an excellent example of helmet design managing to raise the bar in terms of both safety and convenience.
