While the number of participants has yet to be verified, Earth Hour 2009 was a huge success, with countries like China joining into the lights-off global eco stunt.

In Beijing, landmarks like the Olympic Bird’s Nest Stadium and the aquatic Watercube were powered down in honor of Earth Hour 2009, as can be seen in the video above. The gallery shows pictures of Earth Hour 2009 in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Vietnam.

It’s really neat because the whole world now recognizes these Chinese landmarks after the Beijing Olympics, making these photographs have even more impact on the rest of the world than many of Asia’s other landmarks.

Hmmmm I liked the way you wrote "ECO STUNT" because that is what it was. I live here in Beijing and the thought of Beijing turning off the lights of the Nest and Watercube is a joke. For the most part those have been off since the end of the Olympics. The fact is Beijing turned them on so they can turn them off for this event so the Goverment can look like they are doing something to save the environment while at the same thime they open up a new coal-fired plant every month.
