9th Annual World Laughter Day [Edit]

If you can possibly get there, do not miss the 9th Annual Celebration of World Laughter Day in Los Angeles on Sunday, May 6, 2007. This event is sponsored by the Laugh Angeles Foundation (LAF), an organization dedicated to introducing Laughter Yoga into our society.

LAF believes that “we live in a fast and stressful world.” We have all been there in rush hour traffic, watching depressing news on TV, arguing with the kids to get their homework done, having the in-laws over for dinner, taking a “family” vacation where all the restaurants are crowded and the youngest has an accident before completing the last lap to the restroom. Are we having fun yet?

On a scale of 1 to 10, I often wonder what the stress level is for things like getting sniped on eBay, lamenting over when they are actually going to bury James Brown’s body, getting passed on the right while we are doing 70 in a 55 mph zone, getting the bird, not getting more than 2 good numbers on all those weekly lottery tickets, never finding that grilled cheese sandwich that has an image of Leonardo Da Vinci to hawk online, and April 15th.

I don’t know about you, but I’m headed to LA.

"For the most part, when you go and get medical treatment, a clinician is not necessarily going to tell you to take two aspirins and watch Laurel and Hardy," says Dr. Lee Berk. "But the reality is that's where we are and it's more real than ever. There's a real science to this. And it's as real as taking a drug." His numerous carefully controlled scientific studies showed that laughter boosts the body's immune system by releasing beneficial hormones and decreases stress hormones that can lead to disease. His research also suggested that laughing can lower blood pressure, be aerobic for the heart and elevate moods by letting off endorphins. "if you bottled it all up in a pill, you'd need FDA approval," he says. (laughangeles)
