Barranco in Lima, Peru won the 2010 Google Model Your Town Competition with an entry submitted by a corporate business attorney, Jorge De Albertis Bettocchi. Bettocchi created the SketchUp-generated 3D models used in the entry in order to promote tourism and investment in historic preservation. His blog, Barranco 3D project, gives more details.

The 2010 Google Model Your Town Competition awarded Barranco's local school district US$10,000, and the SketchUp folks visited Barranco to recognize the modeling work.

Implications - This virtual 3D tourism experience allowed thousands of people from across the globe to visit the monumental Barranco without ever leaving their homes. These people were able to experience the preserved culture, traditions and architecture of the town that may have otherwise been lost.
