Top 10 Books: 2013

The best books to read this season

— December 28, 2013 — Keynote Trends
End this year with a bang by reading amazing books! The Reading List 2013 combines a list of books that you, as a reader can't just ignore.

Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood- You don't just pick up a book by Ms. Atwood and not read it. The very first book in the The Reading List 2013, Cat's Eye explores the fragility of bonds like friendship and how childhood incidents deeply impact a person throughout his/her life unless a closure is provided.

A Room With a View by E.M. Forster- The second jewel in The Reading List 2013 is this "charming coming-of-age story about a refined young Englishwoman caught between passion and propriety on a trip to Florence." Not only does Forster explores a woman's journey in the Edwardian era but it also holds up a mirror to the English society of the time. It is easy to see why A Room With a View is on the The Reading List 2013.

Consider the Lobster by David Foster Wallace- This book from the The Reading List 2013 is a collection of "a series of raucous postmodern essays that flit effortlessly from Kafka to pornography to John McCain", Emily Landau writes.

Hark! A Vagrant by Kate Beaton- The Reading List 2013 had to have this on its list. This book is a compilation of comic strips about famous authors. It also includes some of their unpublished work.

In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson- Emily Landau describes this book as a "true tale of a reluctant American ambassador and his freewheeling daughter in Berlin in 1933. Told with all the zip and zest of a spy thriller, the book is a nightmare come to life." No wonder it is on the fifth spot in The Reading List 2013 collection.

The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides- If you are a secret romantic, then this is the perfect book for you. The Reading List 2013's The Marriage Plot is a love triangle between 'the goody two shoes' Madeleine, Leonard Morten- a loner who's only flaw is his charisma and Mitchell Grammaticus, who is obsessed with the idea that Maddy is his soul mate.

The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt- For all those who love westerns, this book from The Reading List 2013 will take your breath away as we witness two brothers who are on a quest to find a criminal mastermind. Why? To kill him, of course. Find out how, from this very own book in The Reading List 2013 list.

This Beautiful Life by Helen Schulman- This item from The Reading List 2013 is about a family that is about to be destroyed by a viral video.

Winter by Adam Gopnik- This book from the The Reading List 2013 list combines all five elements- romanticism, recuperation, radicalism, recreation and remembrance- during the time when the Massey Lectures conducted throughout Canada.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë- This had to be in The Reading List 2013. No matter how old it is, a classic is always a classic. Emily Landau writes, "This book is commonly read as a love story. It’s not. It’s a twisted, perverse tale of brutality, insularity and chaos, with Heathcliff and Cathy as the architects of each other’s misery—and it’s phenomenal." Knowing all of that, it should definitely be there on The Reading list 2013.

Happy Reading!! :)
