The Ai Weiwei bicycle installation at Nuit Blanche Toronto this year was easily the standout piece. The Chinese artist also has an exhibition showing at the Art Gallery of Ontario. The Nuit Blanche bicycles are a re-interpretation of his Forever Bicycle exhibit that debuted at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in 2011. This variation features 3,144 connected bikes that form a 3D structure in the middle of Nathan Phillip's Square. The silver vehicles are also functional, as the wheels can be turned by applying pressure on the pedal-like apparatuses. Colored lighting gives the installation an interesting visual effect as well.
The Ai Weiwei bicycle exhibit is meant to symbolize the changing social environment in China and around the world.
