While many lectures have been given on the importance of reducing dependance on fossil fuels, this Lester Brown keynote speech discusses not just the planetary impacts that traditional energy use has but also the social, economical and political sides of the issue.
The speaker is an environmentalist and head of the Earth Policy Institute who examines changing patterns in consumption across the globe. He describes how product intake in China is rising and will, by 2031, lead to the country requiring more product than is actually being produced.
As one of the largest, if not the largest in some instances, consumer of grain, meat and steel in the world, the country's rapidly expanding product consumption will soon rival that of the United States. The problem with that, the speaker notes, is that due to the size of China's population, this will eventually lead to a severe resource deficit in the country.
