The Jonathan Fields fear keynote encourages people to not be threatened by thought of fear, but to rather use it as motivation to drive you. He tells his heart wrenching story of trying to launch a business after the aftermath of 9/11. After it happened he was ridden with anxiety and fear, and wondered whether or not he should go through with it. However since he had already made serious investments, he decided that he couldn’t look back and started his Yoga company.
After his success with his company, he wanted to explore what fear means. He wanted to understand why people either choose to move past it or why for some it completely engulfs them. He says that there are three main fears that take over, fear of failure, fear of judgement, and even fear of success.
Fields says from the beginning of when we start something, we develop a vision of what will happen with it, and if we believe that vision for long enough it can become the result. Which means that your success in something, is highly based on whether you have an optimistic or pessimistic view on things. He says you must re-frame the fear that you have by asking yourself two questions, “What if I do nothing?” and “What if I succeed?”
Fields gives great advice on how to move past fear and how to avoid letting it paralyze you.
