Video-Capable ePaper Displays

E Ink Kaleido 4 Supports Video Playback at 18 FPS

E Ink has introduced video-capable ePaper displays through its Kaleido 4 technology, expanding what electronic paper screens can accomplish beyond traditional reading. New processing algorithms enable video playback at up to 18 frames per second, allowing users to view moving content alongside documents and illustrations. The upgraded display also delivers richer colors and sharper visuals, making it more suitable for educational and professional applications.

Compared with its predecessor, Kaleido 4 doubles color gamut volume to over 40K, increases white reflectance by 15%, and improves contrast by 50%. Hanvon Technology's M10C II notebook is the first device to incorporate the display, offering faster scrolling and enhanced handwriting capabilities.

For manufacturers, these improvements create opportunities to develop ePaper devices for broader productivity needs. Educational institutions and workplaces could also benefit from clearer presentations, technical drawings, and document viewing on portable electronic notebooks.

Video Epaper Interfaces
Low-power screens that support modest motion content create new possibilities for productivity devices that blend document reading, annotation, and visual playback.
Color Reflective Displays
Richer color reproduction and higher contrast in reflective panels expand the viability of eye-friendly alternatives to LCD and OLED screens for professional visual work.
Hybrid Digital Notebooks
Portable notebooks with faster scrolling, handwriting, and media viewing capabilities signal a shift toward paper-like devices serving broader workplace and classroom functions.

Where This Applies

Consumer Electronics
Device makers can differentiate tablets, notebooks, and e-readers through battery-efficient displays that support both static documents and lightweight video content.
Education Technology
Classroom tools using enhanced ePaper could support clearer diagrams, presentations, and annotated materials while reducing screen fatigue for students.
Enterprise Productivity
Workplace hardware built around sharper reflective displays offers an alternative platform for reviewing reports, technical drawings, and training content on portable devices.
