UR-120 Blue Planet is the third and final iteration of the UR-120 from Swiss watchmaker URWERK. The limited-edition model pairs a deep blue sandblasted steel case with the brand's signature satellite-hour display. Measuring 47 millimetres wide, 44 millimetres long and 15.8 millimetres thick, the watch uses a two-part case designed by artistic director Martin Frei. Articulated lugs extend from the smooth upper shell, while a concealed spring integrated into the lower lug improves wrist fit. A domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal exposes the movement and display architecture beneath.
The self-winding Calibre UR-20.01 powers a rotating carousel carrying three hour satellites that travel around an analogue minute scale. As each satellite reaches the left side of the display, it separates into a V-shaped configuration known as the Vulcan salute complication. Lyre-shaped springs and Maltese crosses coordinate the movement, with 175 components dedicated to the carousel assembly alone.

What Makes This Trend Stand Out
- Architectural Horology
- Exposed satellite mechanisms and sculptural case construction signal space for mechanical timepieces that compete through kinetic storytelling rather than traditional dial layouts.
- Limited-edition Final Drops
- Final-series releases with distinctive materials and colors create scarcity models that can reshape collector demand and secondary-market momentum.
- Ergonomic Micro-engineering
- Concealed springs, articulated lugs, and oversized cases show how comfort-focused mechanisms can differentiate high-end products without reducing visual impact.
Sectors Adopting This
- Luxury Watchmaking
- Independent maisons using proprietary complications and limited runs are redefining value around technical spectacle, brand mythology, and collectability.
- Advanced Materials
- Sandblasted steel, sapphire crystals, and precision finishing point to material innovation as a premiumization pathway for durable ornamental products.
- Experiential Retail
- Transparent mechanics and narrative-rich design offer retailers immersive storytelling assets that elevate boutique presentations, digital drops, and collector events.
