These Tony Zhou photographs of a model dressed up as a Chinese opera performer contemporize the traditional Asian entertainment. The makeup and headdress are wholly authentic, but adorning only these elements on a female with beautiful tattoos running along her porcelain arms really goes against stereotypes of a conservative Chinese culture. Couple this with the photo filters that Zhou’s applied to his images and you get a series that’s fantastical and dreamlike despite using familiar items.
The colors in this Tony Zhou collection are also noteworthy as the rich sky blue and highly saturated red pompoms pop visually in contrast to the whiteness of the model’s skin and surroundings. The peach color of her tattoos and eye makeup act as a harmonizing agent that binds each composition.
