Haunting Epidemic Photography

Maxim Dondyuk Chronicles the TB Epidemic in Ukraine

Ukrainian photographer Maxim Dondyuk documents the TB Epidemic in Ukraine for his latest series. The country suffers one of the highest Tuberculosis rates in the world, with the World Health Organization identifying it as one of 27 high burden MTR-TB nations.

Dondyuk chronicles the crisis as it moves from home to hospital to, in several unfortunate cases, the cemetery. The series places special emphasis on the surroundings of the sufferers, who are subject to an inconsistent public health system that is lacking in proper drugs, nutrition and care.

The dismal conditions escalate the gravity of the disease. Dondyuk has faithfully captured the evolution of the horrible affliction, as well as the devastation it leaves in its wake.
