AI-Powered Curbside Recycling

Tacoma Launches an AI Pilot to Improve Curbside Recycling Education

The City of Tacoma is rolling out a new AI pilot program dedicated to improving the accuracy of curbside recycling and educating residents in the process. As part of the initiative, smart cameras will be installed to scan recycling bins and identify common contaminants that don’t belong in the stream.

Initially trained to detect items like non-recyclable plastic bags, the cameras will continue to learn and adapt, identifying a broader range of contaminants over time. This evolving technology will help city officials pinpoint the most frequent recycling mistakes made by residents.

“Any images that inadvertently include faces or license plates are automatically blurred before the image is uploaded to protect privacy,” Peck said. “Residents will only see items identified as contamination in their recycling bin on their postcards and everything else will be blurred.”
