Steel and Stone Piano V2 Transforms Between Instrument and Minimal Monolith

— August 14, 2025 — Lifestyle
The Steel and Stone Piano V2 is a bold statement in design that blends musical function with art gallery presence. Created by design studio Batten and Kamp in collaboration with pianist Henry Chu, it’s an electronic piano crafted from stainless steel with a base of pink granite. Its most striking feature is its ability to shift between performance mode, laid horizontally, and display mode, standing vertically as a sculptural monolith.

This re-engineered version introduces refined elements such as a hidden hinge mechanism for smooth transformation, discreet input ports, a minimalist USB interface, and integrated foot-pedal connectivity. Limited to just eight units plus four artist proofs, each piano embodies a rare fusion of brutalist aesthetics, precision fabrication, and musical craftsmanship. Debuting at Art Basel Hong Kong, the instrument captivated audiences as both a functional performance piece and a standalone artwork, uniting the worlds of music and contemporary design.
