High-Refresh Battery-Limited VR Headsets

Valve Debuts The Steam Frame With High-Refresh Untethered

Valve's Steam Frame is a standalone VR headset from Valve that packs a 21.6 Wh internal battery and built-in streaming via an included Wi‑Fi 6E USB dongle, featuring multi-link streaming to offload heavy rendering. The headset supports high-refresh playback and can run demanding titles untethered thanks to its onboard display and wireless features.

Measured runtimes varied by workload: a 2D projected VR title ran about 1 hour 43 minutes, while Half‑Life: Alyx in standalone mode at 144 Hz lasted around 55 minutes. Streaming the same game from a host PC extended play to roughly 1 hour 36 minutes at 144 Hz, and a 72 Hz test reached about one hour. Recharging took over three hours to hit 100%.

For players who value untethered, high‑refresh VR, the Steam Frame delivers performance but forces frequent top-ups or external power. Offloading to a PC clearly extends sessions, and a magnetically swappable Enthusiast Kit battery is planned to address power users' needs.
