Apple Purchased Spectral Edge to Use Its Infrared Camera Technology

Apple recently acquired Spectral Edge, a startup operating in the U.K which creates machine learning algorithms that can improve the quality of photos in low light environments. The algorithm developed by Spectral Edge improves picture quality by combining the image with infrared, which improves the depth of color. Spectral Edge's Director, Christopher Cytersa, stated that the technology, “Bring[s] in extra detail into the picture that you can’t necessarily see with a normal camera because infrared penetrates through mist and fog much better than visible light.”
Apple did not disclose the financial details of the purchase, however, the technology developed by Spectral Edge will improve the cameras that Apple can build in future devices. Additionally, the technology can be incorporated through either a device's software or chip system.
