Single Shoe Services

adidas Launched a Service for Those Living with Leg Limb Differences

adidas launched its Single Shoe service across 22 European countries, making it possible for consumers with leg limb differences to buy just the shoe they need at 50% of the price of a full pair. This in-store service was developed in collaboration with the community, including ParalympicsGB and partners like Harder Than You Think, the producers of Rising Phoenix, a four-time nominated and double Emmy-winning feature documentary about the history of the Paralympic Movement.

Breaking barriers for athletes with disabilities and bringing adaptive design into the mainstream isn't always about invention from scratch, but about pausing to question why certain standards exist in the first place and who they were originally designed to serve. The Single Shoe service is now offered on all in-stock footwear available at adidas' own stores and outlets in Austria, Belgium, Czechia, and other countries with participating stores.

Single-item Retailing
Offering individual units of products creates potential for retail models that reduce waste and better serve asymmetric consumer needs while reshaping pricing and inventory logic.
Adaptive Design Mainstreaming
Integrating accessibility features into mainstream product lines allows functional adaptations to become aesthetic and normative elements rather than niche add-ons.
Community Co-design Partnerships
Collaborative development with lived-experience communities can produce more relevant product offerings and unlock new market segments through credibility and informed innovation.

Sectors Adopting This

Footwear Retail
Retailers could reconfigure supply chains and point-of-sale systems to support single-item orders and dynamic inventory that aligns with diverse customer anatomies.
Sports and Adaptive Athletics
Organizations in adaptive sports may benefit from tailored equipment and apparel ecosystems that normalize inclusive gear and expand participation opportunities.
Prosthetics and Rehabilitation Services
Clinical and commercial prosthetics providers stand to gain from modular, customizable product offerings that blend medical function with consumer-focused design and distribution.
