Selkirk Sport Introduces 'Pick It Up'

— May 12, 2026 — Lifestyle
Selkirk Sport, through its affiliated Pickleball Coaching International and in partnership with the Medical University of South Carolina, has introduced the Pick It Up certification program. This specialized training course is designed to educate pickleball instructors on how to safely teach the sport to individuals with Parkinson’s disease.

Research indicates that the sport of pickleball can enhance cognitive function, social interaction, and gross motor skills for those living with Parkinson’s disease. Thus, Pick It Up provides evidence-informed methods that translate insights from movement disorder specialists into specific coaching adaptations. Participants will learn techniques to modify drills to accommodate balance challenges, manage the unique learning curves associated with the disease, and foster confidence in a socially supportive environment. The certification is available as a standalone course.

  1. Accessibility-focused Sports Certification — New credentialing pathways that validate specialized teaching skills for instructors working with neurological conditions create opportunities to redefine professional standards in recreational sports.
  2. Therapeutic Sport Adaptations — Evidence-informed modifications of drills and practice formats tailored to balance and motor-control limitations have the potential to transform inclusive program design across multiple disciplines.
  3. Collaborative Health-sport Research Translation — Cross-sector partnerships that convert clinical movement-disorder insights into coachable techniques could reshape how clinical evidence is delivered to community-based activity programs.

Industry Implications

  1. Sports Coaching and Education — Specialized certification offerings aligned with clinical evidence present a chance to expand curriculum portfolios and credential value within coaching institutions.
  2. Neurorehabilitation and Therapeutic Recreation — Integrating sport-based interventions that demonstrably support cognition and motor skills may change care pathways and diversify therapeutic program options.
