Hinge Combats Fake Accounts with the New Selfie Verification

As of the next month, dating app Hinge is rolling out a new profile verification process that is meant to combat the rise of fake accounts with Selfie Verification. The feature prompts users to upload a video of themselves within the app to verify that they are who they say they are.

The app uses a blend of machine learning along with human oversight to confirm that the person is rightfully who they present themselves to be. Match Group, the parent company of Hinge speaks to Wired about the feature, noting that it will roll out by December. “As romance scammers find new ways to defraud people, we are committed to investing in new updates and technologies that prevent harm to our daters,”
