The Saxum Tiles Mimic the Surface Qualities of Natural Stone

— May 15, 2026 — Art & Design
Saxum tiles are a porcelain stoneware range produced by Casalgrande Padana, an Italian tile manufacturer founded in 1960 and headquartered in the town of Casalgrande. The collection is designed to replicate the surface qualities of naturally quarried stone, incorporating sporadic veining, delicate coloration, and visible imperfections. Saxum tiles are available in five colorways — Antracite, Beige, Bianco, Grigio, and Perla — and in two finishes: a natural matt and a silk surface.

The range is suitable for interior and exterior applications including walls, floors, worktops, partitions, and facade cladding. Saxum tiles are resistant to wear, warpage, and thermal shock, and an optional Bios Ceramics antibacterial treatment is available across the range. The material is composed of natural raw materials, is fully recyclable, non-absorbent, fire-resistant, and non-allergenic.

Trend Themes

  1. Stone-effect Porcelain — A growing preference for high-performance porcelain that convincingly mimics natural stone opens possibilities for durable, low-maintenance alternatives in load-bearing and exposed architectural surfaces.
  2. Antibacterial Surface Treatments — Optional Bios Ceramics and similar antimicrobial finishes point to materials that can reduce surface-borne contamination risk in shared and clinical environments.
  3. Sustainable Recyclable Ceramics — Fully recyclable, non-absorbent ceramic compositions suggest a shift toward circular-material building components that lower lifecycle environmental impact.

Industry Implications

  1. Architecture and Design — Specification of stone-effect porcelain for facades, floors, and worktops indicates potential for new design vocabularies combining aesthetics with long-term performance.
  2. Healthcare Facilities — Healthcare settings could benefit from non-porous, antibacterial, and fire-resistant surfaces that support infection control and rigorous cleaning protocols.
  3. Hospitality and Retail — High-traffic hotels and retail spaces stand to gain from resilient, low-maintenance finishes that preserve a premium natural-stone look while minimizing upkeep.
