Safaricom, in collaboration with global nonprofit Opportunity International, has launched FarmerAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot designed to provide real-time, localized farming insights to smallholder farmers in underserved communities.
The chatbot is set to revolutionize agricultural support by offering instant, data-driven advice on critical topics such as weather patterns, fertilizer application, pest control, and market prices—all tailored to specific crop cycles and regional conditions.
The project is in its pilot phase and will run until August 2025, aligning with Kenya’s potato crop cycle. Safaricom and Opportunity International aims to enroll up to 1,000 farmers by the end of the year, with a long-term vision of scaling the technology to reach even more communities.
Unlike traditional agricultural extension programs, FarmerAI is designed for accessibility, delivering guidance via SMS and WhatsApp, ensuring farmers can receive vital information on the go and in real-time.
