Redesigned 360-Degree Cameras

'Ricoh' Partnered with 'nTop' to Optimize its Theta Camera

The Ricoh Theta is a popular pocket-sized 360-degree camera. The Theta is commonly used in applications requiring 360-degrees of focus in one shot, such as virtual tours, scanning for VR, security monitoring, or production line monitoring. Ricoh utilizes the Theta in 24-hour monitoring of its production lines, ensuring that any malfunctions or errors are caught as promptly as possible.

Given these conditions and the fact that the Theta is left constantly on and recording, the pocket-sized gadget generates a high amount of heat, which could damage its internal components sooner than desired. To fix this, Ricoh partnered with nTop and its implicit modelling software that enables quick analysis of different heat transfer methods without requiring physical prototypes. When speaking on the use of nTop's software, Tsuji Masato, a mechanical designer at Ricoh, stated: “With conventional CAD software, it is practically impossible to evaluate multiple complex shapes such as gyroids. With nTop, creating and testing these shapes was easy.”
