Recyclable Barrier Packaging Films

Innovia Films Introduces Propafilm CHBM as Aluminum Alternative

Innovia Films has introduced recyclable barrier packaging films designed to replace traditional aluminum foil while maintaining protection against oxygen and moisture. Its new Propafilm CHBM uses metallized biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP), a stretched plastic film that helps preserve product freshness, aroma, and flavor. Unlike conventional foil-based laminates, the material supports packaging structures made primarily from polypropylene, simplifying designs intended for recycling.

The 18-micrometer film combines strong metal adhesion with thermal stability, making it suitable for food packaging, stand-up pouches, and other flexible applications. Its protective properties help maintain product quality throughout distribution and storage.

For packaging manufacturers, the material offers an alternative to aluminum foil without compromising essential barrier performance. Brands could also use the film to advance recyclable packaging goals while maintaining product protection, potentially increasing demand for mono-material solutions across the flexible packaging industry.

Recyclable Barrier Films
Mono-material films that preserve oxygen and moisture protection create room for packaging formats that balance shelf-life performance with simpler recycling streams.
Aluminum-free Packaging
Metallized polypropylene alternatives are reshaping foil-dependent applications by reducing reliance on traditional laminates while maintaining freshness, aroma, and flavor protection.
Mono-material Pouches
Flexible pouch designs built primarily from polypropylene introduce new possibilities for recyclable stand-up formats across food, snack, and household product categories.

Sectors Adopting This

Flexible Packaging
The shift toward recyclable high-barrier films is expanding competitive differentiation for converters developing lighter, easier-to-process alternatives to foil laminates.
Food Packaging
Freshness-preserving recyclable materials are enabling packaged food brands to align sustainability targets with the functional demands of distribution and storage.
Plastics Manufacturing
Advanced BOPP film production is becoming a platform for material innovation as manufacturers refine thermal stability, metal adhesion, and recyclability performance.
