Employees at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, Germany have begun protesting return to office mandates, citing concerns surrounding CoViD-19 and its many variants. At the beginning of the pandemic, many companies adapted to social distancing regulations by providing work-from-home opportunities to many, if not all, employees. Now, several years later, many of these companies are attempting to bring their workforces back to the office.
However, European Central Bank employees are members of the ECB Staff Union, which works to protect the rights of the bank's workers. The union cites concerns surrounding the office's ability to facilitate safe social distancing measures and the threat to health that new CoViD-19 variants, such as the Delta variant, bring to the environment.
The ECB Staff Union has cited statistics in order to defend the workers, such as how 61% of employees, a vast majority, feel the return-to-office conditions are not sufficiently safe. Additionally, the ECB Staff Union has noted that the building sees more than 3,000 workers use the same five elevators to reach the many floors, which is a large social distancing concern.
