Pharmacist-Led Health Coaching

Walmart Gives Rural Customers Personalized Wellness Support

Pharmacist-led health coaching is expanding the role of retail pharmacists beyond prescriptions to provide more personalized wellness guidance. Walmart is testing a six-month Health Ambassador pilot at stores serving rural communities, giving trained pharmacists dedicated time to understand individual health goals and connect customers with relevant resources. Support can include nutrition and movement guidance, screenings, immunizations, medication services, virtual care and digital tools. The program will initially focus on diabetes, weight management and maternal health.

The pilot allows Walmart to use its extensive store network and existing pharmacist relationships to address gaps in healthcare access within underserved areas. By connecting pharmacy, grocery, telehealth and wellness services through one dedicated associate, Walmart can make its existing health ecosystem easier to navigate. The approach could also increase engagement across Walmart’s services while providing a scalable model for expanding retail-based healthcare support.
