Apple's HomeView will support third-party iPhone widgets, letting iPhone users place familiar app panels on the home display even without an App Store. The added widget path broadens its third-party support beyond the audio and video apps already slated for the device.
Because any iOS app can supply a CarPlay widget, HomeView's widget library should reach well past its supported media apps. Tools already seen in CarPlay, including ChatGPT and Instagram, can carry over to HomeView and preserve the glanceable routines people already use in the car. Pre-orders start at $289 for select models.
Support for iPhone widgets turns HomeView into an extension of the phone rather than a sealed household screen, widening its fit for homes already organized around Apple's widget habits.

What's Driving This Trend
- Phone-mirrored Interfaces
- Household displays that replicate familiar mobile widgets create openings for services built around continuity across personal, vehicle, and home environments.
- Glanceable Home Computing
- Compact app panels on shared screens signal a shift toward ambient information access where productivity, social, and AI tools are available without full app navigation.
- Widget-based App Discovery
- Third-party widgets on non-phone devices expand lightweight distribution models that reduce reliance on traditional app stores and full-screen experiences.
Who This Affects Most
- Smart Home Technology
- Connected home platforms gain new relevance as shared displays become personalized control and information hubs tied to existing smartphone behaviors.
- Mobile App Development
- App makers can extend engagement into domestic contexts through widget formats that preserve familiar user routines beyond handheld devices.
- Consumer Electronics
- Device manufacturers face new differentiation potential as hardware value increasingly depends on seamless software mirroring and cross-device ecosystem integration.
