The BBC's Own It App Uses Technology to Improve Online Interactions

The BBC Own It app was designed to ensure that children are exposed to positive online experiences, and it seeks to provide support when negative interactions occur. The app was created in collaboration with The Duke of Cambridge’s Cyberbullying Taskforce, where the app was in development since 2018.

The Own It app is able to operate using a smart keyboard, which is presented to the user whenever they type. The smart keyboard is able to detect negative language, and it can subsequently extend support or advice to the child. The app also has a diary, where children are able to record their emotional state. The system is able to detect negative language using machine learning.
