This Novel Ship Uses Green Ammonia For Emissions-Free Maritime Transport

Brooklyn-based Amogy, which is credited with innovating the world's first ammonia-powered semi truck and tractor, is now looking to take its technology to the open seas with the advent of a novel ship that will look to make use of ammonia as its combustion fuel.

Ammonia is noted for being able to offer a desirable ratio between weight and energy, because while it doesn't come close to matching diesel for equivalent energy output, it does offer the advantage of not emitting any carbon dioxide. For this novel ship, Amogy is using a system that will essentially extract hydrogen from the ammonia, with the hydrogen then used in a fuel cell to provide electric motoring capabilities.

Using green ammonia provided by Yara Clean Ammonia, this novel ship is expected to be fully commercialized in 2024, at which point it aims to represent a massive step forward when it comes to bringing clean and emissions-free energy to the gigantic maritime industry.
